COVID-19: Ondo NUJ Closes Secretariat As Oyo Counterpart Says No Need For Such Now

Sequel to fear of coronavirus' contraction which allegedly necessitating the closure of the Nigeria Union of Journalist(NUJ) Secretariat in Ondo State, its counterpart in Oyo State has refused to follow same step, stressing it has put the necessary measures in place.

In a release made on Wednesday, 25th March   by the Chairman, Oyo NUJ Chapter, Ademola Babalola said that there was no need to currently close the state's secretariat as the necessary measures have been put in place.

In his words, "The NUJ Exco had about three weeks ago, bought all the sanitisers and handwashing tools needed to safeguard the health of members who are regular visitors to our Secretariat. We placed them strategically, including the guest house" Ademola said

He reiterated that, "48hrs ago, we went further to procure buckets which have tap openings, to ensure guests to our facilities are safe and did not inflict us, if any..I personally went round last night to monitor compliance with our vendors, who were also mandated to take a cue from what the Union has done. And I was satisfied with d level of compliance".

"The Oyo State NMA Chairman was our visitor last night and we discussed issues of Covid-19 vis a vis our Report to the State Govt.He lauded us and expressed willingness to collaborate Oyo NUJ and Nursing Association to do our best for our dear state and it's good citizens. Remember,  he is our regular visitor like other great men in d State".

"The Ondo Press Statement closing down their Press Centre was a cue taken from d efforts we have made in d last few days.As I am chatting with you, their Chairman, Aderoboye just left our guest house about 2hrs ago! He came to Ibadan with other five NUJ officials from Ogun and Osun States.

They were around to assist our ALGIO Chapel here to  get the support of State Govt officials to ensure d creation of a separate Dept for Information at the council level. And we were satisfied with the efforts as we recorded tremendous supports from d officials visited throughout yesterday. Kudos to the Alh. Kunle Kareem-led Exco of Oyo ALGIO".

"Needless to say that closing down Ondo NUJ council was basically to make a statement in line with what they have seen us doing in Oyo Council. Those who had visited or slept in Ondo Council would know that there was no need for the statement because we know what was and still obtainable there".

"As a responsive and responsible leaders, we will keep monitoring activities at d Centre as we have been doing. If it means closing it down, we will not hesitate doing so, but for now, let's keep monitoring events as they unfold".

"On an Oyo Group that came to side with us on the Statement we released to draw Govt's attention to do more in fighting Covid-19, I appreciate them for the honour. But let's stop further discussions on this issue as our position has been well articulated and history will be kind to us, all" Babalola stressed.
