Oyo Gov. Set to Wage war Against Drug Trafficking and Abuse

The Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, this Wednesday said Nigeria is a key player in drug trafficking and abuse, which has a collateral consequences on the country's nascent democracy, national development, security, economic and corporate image in the comity of nations. 

The governor, through his deputy, Rauf Olaniyan stated this in his address at the 2019 United Nation International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at House of Chiefs, Agodi, Secretariat, Ibadan.

He noted that, the siege of insurgency and violent crime facing the nation makes it imperative for strategic plans and actions beyond the status quo to be deployed to rid  Oyo state the menace of drug trafficking and abuse.

Speaking on the 2019 United Nations' (UN) International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with the theme: Health for Justice, Justice for Health; the Oyo State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barrister Ralph Igwenagu, explained that between January to June 25, 2019, the command has arrested over 165 drug suspects comprising 139 males and 17 females for drug related offenses.

He revealed that NDLEA Oyo command has secured the conviction of 44 defendants and they were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment; ranging from 6months to 15years. While 85 drug users were counseled and rehabilitated with their families as useful members of the society.

The United Nations' (UN) International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26, each year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drug represent. This year's theme is: Health for Justice, Justice for Health.
