Oyo Assembly To AJIMOBI: Sensitise Youths To Desist From Self Medication.

The Oyo state Assembly has called on Governor Abiola Ajimobi to help sensitise young people against self medication and any form of drug abuse.
Particularly, the house urged Ajimobi through the ministry of health to engage public sensitisation, especially the youths to avoid the use of tramadol, codeine and other hard drugs without proper prescription by a medical personnel.

On Tuesday's plenary, the assembly's call was drawn from a prayer of the Representing of Atiba state constituency, honourable Gbenga Oyekola, titled "A call on the public to avoid self medication, drug abuse and desist from taking drugs without prescriptions."
Oyekola argued that it is not uncommon to see people engage in self medication without medical advice. This is considering that accessibility to medical service is not available, hence people seek alternative avenues.

According to him, a case in point is the use of tramadol, largaetil, rophypnol, morphine and codeine.
"Tramadol like any other drug has its side effects, include anxiety, constipation, diarrhoea, agitation, insomnia, hallucination, amongst others."
Chairman, House Committee on finance and Appropriation, Bolanle Agbaje discouraged public hawking of drugs and inappropriate mixing of drugs by retail drug sellers.

Also, Honourable Fatai Adesina, representing Ibadan South East 1 suggested that a legislation be set up to regulate the sales of drug and stop the purchase of over the counter drugs.
The assembly led by honourable speaker Olagunju Ojo however advised health institutions both public and private to be very cautious in prescribing tramadol, codeine and other hard drugs for patients and to monitor closely patients using these drugs.
