PDP Accuses APC of Inflicting Flooding on Lagosians

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the perennial flooding in Lagos on the state government, saying, it was caused by previous administration’s penchant for building bogus estates on waterfronts.

Also, a former Lagos lawmaker who represented Epe Federal Constituency, Mr. Lanre Odubote has called on the Federal Government to come to the aid of the state in fighting flood.

The PDP also dismissed the call on Federal Government to come to the aid of the state in the fight against flood. PDP also said the special status or additional funding will not address the problem because it was caused mainly by the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a telephone conversation with The Guardian yesterday, Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Taofik Gani said flood in Lagos was due to the sand filling of various waterfronts to build estates, which senior government officials in the state appropriate among themselves.

Meanwhile, residents of Kudeyibu Estate, Ijegun in Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area, Lagos State have begun to count their losses, following the havoc wreaked by yesterday’s heavy downpour in the area.

Houses, shops, churches and other properties were waterlogged during the heavy rainfall, destroying buildings and household properties, running into millions of naira.

The Guardian learnt that from Kudeyibu Street through Fatade and Toriola Streets, down to the beginning of Oshun road, it was tales of woes, as their houses were submerged.

According to a resident, Mr. Godwin Omoh, the flood also affected Sekinatu Bolanle and Aregbesola Streets, down to Omoh Street, extending to House of Prayer Street and beyond.

Another resident, who gave his name simply as Pastor Seun disclosed that a construction company, working in the area had channeled water in those axis, without making provision to direct it into the canal.

“The state government came and erected sign posts where the waterway will be channeled about three years ago, that was the last thing we heard. We heard that government has not even included the chanelisation of the flood in next year’s budgetary plan.

“We are crying to the state government to save our souls. Houses are fast going under water; they shouldn’t wait until we record casualties here. What is happening is not the fault of any of us, but government’s failure to construct canal and their failure to properly divert water from the newly constructed expressway drainage.
