Save LGs from Collapse, Gbajabiamila Tells State Assemblies’ Speakers
The speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, yesterday tasked speakers of the 36 states’ assemblies to save the local government system from imminent collapse.
The speaker said the seventh and eighth National Assemblies took some “far reaching resolutions” to grant autonomy to local governments to improve development at the grassroots.
He spoke in Lagos during the roundtable organized for the speakers organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.
Represented his deputy, Ahmed Idris Wase, Gbajabiamila said the issue was not about the governors but strengthening governance at the grassroots level, saying, “A revitalized local government system would in our view bring about effective governance.”
